How it works

We handle verification, payments and damage protection. Your local owner handles the handover and the advice.

Collect and use it

The owner walks you through the kit in about ten minutes. Every kit includes a printed starter guide.

Trust and safety

Renting someone else's equipment only works when both sides know what happens if something goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my deposit?

It is authorised on your card rather than taken. If the kit is returned as it went out — checked against the photo list you both confirmed at handover — the hold is released within 48 hours. If something is missing or damaged, we tell you exactly what and why before anything is charged, and you can dispute it.

Is damage protection worth adding?

For low-value kits it usually isn't. For anything involving optics, engines or water, £4–£9 caps your exposure at a £25 excess rather than your full deposit. It's optional on every kit and can be added up until collection.

Can I collect on a weekday?

About half of our owners offer midweek collection. Use the "flexible dates" filter on the kits page. Weekend windows are the default simply because that's when most kits are free.

What if the weather ruins my plans?

Outdoor kits can be cancelled for weather up to two hours before collection for a full refund. We don't ask for proof.

I enjoyed the hobby — what now?

Most owners will tell you what to buy and, more usefully, what to skip. Renters get 15% off a second rental of the same kit, and we send a short buyer's guide written by the owner.

How does Borrowed Weekend make money?

A 12% service fee on each rental plus the margin on optional damage protection. There is no membership, no listing fee and no charge for browsing.
